The Friends of the Earth (HK) was established as a charitable organization in 1983, and it is one of the leading environmental groups in Hong Kong. Aimed at protecting the environment of Hong Kong and the neighbouring regions, the NEO tries to promote the cooperation among government, enterprises and the public to build a sustainable environmental policy, business practices and lifestyle. Without government subsidy, the self-financing organization depends on the contributions and supports from kind-hearted benefactors, volunteer groups and individuals. Members of the Board of Directors and all the employers and members of Friends of the Earth Hong Kong consider it as their responsibilities to increase the environmental awareness of the general public, to enhance their attention to environmental and ecological issues and to make good use of all kinds of natural resources. However, instead of being a member of the Friends of the Earth International, this organization is an independent one.
To improve the state of environment, the organization is committed to improving the quality of life and the environment of Hon Kong and the Mainland mainly through various studies, environmental education, community activities and some related environmental movement. Each citizen should participate in the activities to protect our environment. In order to encourage the public to take part in the work to improve environment which we live in, the members of this organization visit communities to introduce ways of saving energy, water and waste reduction to the residents. They also organize activities such as planting trees, protecting forest and enjoying the nature. Besides, they promote recycling waste paper, plastic bottles, old clothes, CDs, batteries, toner cartridges as well. And the good news is that the consequence is quite encouraging, because of the overwhelming response of the public.
In addition, the Friends of the Earth (HK) attaches great importance to environmental education, lots of training teams have often been invited to give lectures in local or overseas institutions, primary schools and middle schools. Besides, the training and education teams also assist scholars in carrying out waste recovery and recycling project. They also help enterprises to train their staff and provide environmental audit services as well as send environmental messages. So the organization make surveys on environmental issues regularly, and make research results published to encourage the public to create a better environmental shared responsibility. The organization also has their own publications such as the Environment and Children’s Health, the Coast’s Guide series, and Sunshine or Night, etc. In addition to publishing books and articles, this council also published several studies in recent years, including the Hong Kong sustainable development: Study of Consumer Attitudes and Behaviours of Environmental Liability and Survey on Attitudes of the People of Hong Kong to Electricity in 2007.
To conclude, the organization pays much attention to those immediate problems, such as how to deal with the waste and the state of deterioration of air quality. To solve these kinds of problems, the organization takes lots of effective measures. For example, the Solar Car Race was held in 2000 to promote pollution-free driving, and Green Consumer Action also has been promoted.
