Consumers can get relevant information, for example nutritional value, about certain food product from its item name; while sometimes it is hard to tell a food product’s nutritional value for the ambiguity of its name, consumer may draw other inferences to see the product’s nutritional value, such as ingredients, appearance, portion size. In the current research, the researchers investigate the influence of merely altering the name of a food item on dieters’ and nondieters’ evaluations of its healthfulness and taste, as well as consumption. Through four studies, the researchers demonstrate that when a food product is given by a relatively healthy name, the perceptions from consumers who are on a diet have no influence from their dieting tendency; when a food product (an item with the same ingredients, appearance, portion size) is given by a relatively unhealthy name, the consumers who are on a diet consider it as less healthy, while those nondieters see no difference. All of these evaluations from dieters and nondieters affect consumption. These effects that food product’s name bears on consumers are driven by differences in information processing depended on whether they are on a diet or not. In choosing food product, dieters and nondieters differ because of their motivation and propensity. Facing food consumption, dieters strive to keep their choice of food with their dieting tendency; while nondieters have no such rules to go with. Based on this, if the name of certain food product provides consumers with less healthfulness inferences about itself, it will be regarded as less healthy even though it share the same ingredients, appearance, and portion size with the same product who has a relatively healthy name.
